Silly little fanfic idea I'll almost certainly never get around to writing, so I'm throwing it out there so it's at least out of my head.

So, A:tLA Season 2, Ba Sing Se, just after Jet's been arrested, Katara manages to ditch Joo De and goes to the Lower Ring to try and get any gossip on Appa. Instead, she hears a couple of people talking about that young man who was arrested by the Dai Li after he attacked young Lee in the tea shop and accused him and his uncle of being firebenders, utterly ridiculous of course, no way a boy with a giant burn on his face like that could be anything but a victim of the Fire Nation-

And Katara hears 'burn on his face' and 'uncle' and 'firebenders' and decides to check it out, and sure enough, that's Zuko and his uncle. But because she was expecting it, and she's not carrying important war plans, and the "Kyoshi Warriors" haven't arrived yet, she doesn't immediately run off to tell someone. She could, though, because there are guards drinking in there and Dai Li lurking nearby. Instead, she quickly realises they really are just making tea and minding their own business. And because there are guards in there and Dai Li lurking nearby, she instead decides to go in and be the Worst Customer Ever. Demanding free tea and snacks, sending them back and claiming they're wrong, deliberately spilling tea and sugar and crumbs all over the place, snapping her fingers at the silently seething tea boy... just being an absolute petty menace because it's funny and she hates him.

But the Dai Li are lurking, and they interrogated that guy who attacked the tea boy and found out he'd met the Avatar and his waterbending master, the same waterbender who also seems to have beef with the tea boy, so maybe there was something in that firebender accusation after all. So they drop in later for tea and a chat and ask Zuko what his relationship is exactly with the Avatar's waterbending master, because she seemed pretty mad at him-

-And Iroh, lunging for an excuse that a) will hide their firebendyness and b) be really funny (to him), tells them that Katara is Zuko's ex-girlfriend and it was a bad breakup, and Zuko has no choice but to go along with it and agree that he was a bit of a shit to her.

Anyway, no idea where to go from there, but I'm imagining Katara showing up again to torment him some more, maybe bringing Toph along for the fun, and discovering that the entire tea shop thinks she's Zuko's bitchy ex.

i considered going all in with dresses and that definitely would’ve been cute but i ultimately decided to design their canon costumes as if this were a magical girl series (i still have the full dress doodles in my back pocket but they’re a lil too rough to share but perhaps i’ll clean them up)
